NEW Pros and cons of different types of group You should only use a manual list when there is no other way to identify the profiles in the group, because this list could quickly become out of date if it is not manually amended. For example, if you do not store information about which staff are team leads, you might choose to show them in a manual list. However if a new team lead starts with your organisation, some one will have to remember to manually add them to this list, because they will not automatically appear there.
If you have a field which identifies which member of staff is a team lead, you can use this to create an auto list, which will automatically add and new team leads and remove anyone who is no longer a team lead. This refresh is performed automatically every time a list is viewed.
When you would like to know if profiles are in one list of data, but not in another you should create a merge list. This combines information from 2 or more existing lists and can be very powerful, however, if one of the lists used in the merge gets deleted, the merge list will not work. Therefore, it is useful to incorporate in your list description field if the list is used in a merge list, so it doesn't get deleted in error.
Updated text, mainly the 'type of groups' to provide some examples and more explanation on them and some warnings Also updated 'using groups' to mention comms and specifically MailChimp sync lists.
