Let's figure out what our basic data models may look like. These initial thoughts are pretty closely tied to a typical RDBMS way of thinking. I'm up for something different if it is advantageous.

• User -- Name, username, email
• Device -- belongs_to :user, push notification ID, device identifiers, etc
• StateVariable -- label, type, created_by, created_at
• StateVariableValue -- belongs_to :state_variable, set_by_user, value, created_at, message
• StateVariableUser -- join table between Users and StateVariables. user_id, state_variable_id, permission (read/write), created_at
• UserAlertRules -- belongs_to :user, belongs_to :state_variable, rules definition object (JSON?), num_triggered
• Some structure that defines user-definable folder hierarchy of StateVariables. That way you could organization state variables shared with family in one folder, with business in another, etc.
