No tabs are actually created?

No tabs are visible in the UI, but CMD/Ctrl+W will close the tab and return you to wherever you pressed CMD/Ctrl+T in the first place.

That's weird, because if I create a new tab and then go left or right, I'm not taken back to my page.

What do you mean by left + right? CMD/Ctrl+Left/CMD/Ctrl+Right go back and forward, CMD/Ctrl+[ and CMD/Ctrl+] cycle through tabs.
