still missing:

[ ] ~~assert that pdfs have one page each~~ (not possible without adding lots more depds)
[x] capture error messages from cli
[ ]~~assert that package is available~~ (not necessary, error messages are informative)
[x] make this work on linux, travis, shiny as far as possible (all works except for shiny, which is https://github.com/maxheld83/accio/issues/146)
