After installing 17a update pydev no longer shows up in Eclipse #131

I just updated to Python(x,y)-2.1.17a and when I ran Eclipse pydev no
longer shows up as a project type and there is no pydev perspective. I have
just done the basic update - no extra plugins or anything of that nature.
This problem occurred on both my Vista and XP PCs.

I use the default directories (c:\pythonxy and c:\python25) for my
installation. It is installed for all users in both PCs. In both cases, I
am an administrator on the PC. On the Vista PC, I just double-clicked the
installer to run it (I get the usual "are you sure it's safe message" and
then let the installer run). In both cases, I ran the updaters (my Vista PC
was version 2.1.14 and XP was 2.1.12) to bring the version up to 2.1.15
(there is no 2.1.16 updater) and then just installed as usual. I didn't
clean anything because I was just doing an update.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install/update to v2.1.15
2. Run the update installer for 2.1.17a (I tried 2.1.17b but it requires
2.1.16 which doesn't seem to exist).
3. Run Eclipse.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expected to see pydev projects and the pydev perspective in Eclipse.

Please provide any additional information below.
I am going to try and uninstall python(x,y) completely and just use the
2.1.17 full installer to see if that resolves the problem. Hopefully, that
will do the trick. Otherwise, I may have to revert to 2.1.15 (full install)
to see if that works. I know that 2.1.14 works for sure so maybe I need to
go back to that.

OK, I uninstalled Python(x,y) completely, cleaned out all references in the
registry
and installed the full version of 2.1.17. It seems to be working correctly at
this
point. It might be worth checking the updater to make sure that it is doing the
right
thing relative to pydev since that seems to be where the main problem is.

So I installed the full Python(x,y) 2.1.17 on my XP PC and I find that it didn't
install the actual python interpreters!!! It did install them on my Vista PC
but not
the XP PC. When I installed 2.1.17, it told me that Python 2.5 was already
installed
(which it wasn't). Perhaps that is why it didn't install it since it thought it
was
already there. Could that be the problem? I checked the registry and removed all
references to python (both the pythonxy and python25 directories) before I
installed
2.1.17. So I'm not sure where it was finding the information about python
already
being installed. I think I need to drop back to 2.1.14 for the XP PC or maybe
install
python 2.5.4 by itself to get it working again. I noticed that previously the
interpreters were located in the pythonxy/python directory but they are no
longer
there with the new install.

I installed updates, Py(x,y)-2.6.5.2.exe and Py(x,y)-2.6.5.3.exe, pydev no
longer shows up in Eclipse. I tried to use update manager in Eclipse, but I
can't get it to work. Anyone has same problem?

I have the same problem after uninstalling 2.6.2.0 and reinstalling with
2.6.5.6. I've even tried reinstalling the old version but pydev still doesn't
show up.

I've tried to install pydev through eclipse but that doesn't work either.

I have tried to clean out my registry keys but to no avail. Any tips would
really help.

(Comment largely copied from Issue 159--seems relevant here.)

I had problems with PyDev after upgrading to Python(x,y) 2.6.5.6 from 2.6.5.3.
The PyDev website seemed to suggest uninstalling PyDev, but I was unable to do
so in Eclipse.

Finally resolved the issue by upgrading to Eclipse 3.6 and downloading PyDev
1.6.4 from the Eclipse Marketplace (new in 3.6). Before installing the new
Eclipse I completely removed the eclipse directory from Pythonxy (first ran
uninstaller .exe files in directories, then manually removed remaining files).

Unfortunately, now Python(x,y) does not know about the Eclipse install, but it
is not difficult to just create a shortcut to the eclipse.exe file.
