This change will take effect in the MBTA's GTFS feed beginning on Wednesday 17 May 2023.
Summary
The GTFS schedule data will now include, for selected Subway and Commuter Rail routes, extra trips that help represent what the normal or "canonical" operating patterns are on the given route in a given direction. These trips will include stations that are temporarily closed for construction, such as South Attleboro. The canonical trips will not be active on any date, but are to be used merely for reference and comparison purposes against actual, scheduled trips, using the new fields and values also being introduced:
Adds new service_schedule_typicality value (6) for service representing canonical service.
Adds new route_pattern_typicality value (5) for route patterns representing canonical patterns.
Adds new canonical_route_pattern field to _routepatterns.txt, for determining whether a pattern should be considered canonical.
