upon install of SF, no longer have headphone output #99

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. installing Soundflower
2. attempting to listen to any sound from any application with headphones
3. once headphones or other mini-jack device inserted in output, output becomes 
optical out and will not return until it is removed

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

expected: to be able to listen to output through headphones or use other analog 
device

instead: no sound, grayed out volume control, no option in preferences for 
built-in device output other then digital out

uninstall does not fix this problem

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Sound flower 1.5.2 with OS 10.6.3

Please provide any additional information below.

i've seen a few problems on here similar, but none that match exactly this 
problem

i am having the exact same problem, same SoundFlower and OSX versions.

This issue is extremely serious as a basic feature of my mac computer (playing 
sounds off analog out) has been permanently disabled even after uninstalling 
soundflower. Because of this I am writing to all my friends telling them to 
avoid installing SoundFlower and to spread the word around that this is a 
dangerous app.

I cannot understand how such a serious problem doesn't even deserve a reply 
from the development team.

I am so mad at you guys...

i have been warning colleagues as well...i'm going to have to take my computer 
in to get this fixed, as i haven't had one reply from the Soundflower folk 
since i wrote this.

Seriously, this issue is all over the web, and no one seems to have a fix for 
it.  Soundflower is a great concept, but this is such a major problem.  I've 
been unable to use my internal speakers or headphones for weeks since this 
install.  Uninstalling it doesn't make the problem go away.

it doesn't seem like anyway has been contacted or had their problem 
acknowledged by Soundflower either...i'm considering writing to Google and 
letting them know, as they host the technology.

hey Soundflower guys,

have you seen or addressed these posts yet?

as you can see...this is a big problem

i am going to have to take my computer in to get fixed...i do NOT have the
spare money to throw around doing this

i'm not to type to threat or give an ultimatum, but this is too destructive
a problem to people's work, and there must be some attention and
responsibility taken

through a friend i now have access to a higher up at googlecode whom i will
write to with this problem unless i receive a correspondence from you by the
beginning of next week...i'm sorry it's come to that...but really you guys,
come on...this is not a minor issue

through a friend at google, i now have an address to a higher up at 
googlecode...i've written to Soundflower folk asking them one last time to 
address this issue, if even only to acknowledge they are aware and working on 
it.  if i don't hear from them, i'm going to write to googlecode.  i'll keep 
all informed on this thread.

Have there been any updates on this problem?! I just had kind of the same thing 
happen—my internal audio has been disabled/deleted/destroyed, but I can 
fortunately still use headphones. Because it's a slightly different issue, I 
opened a new bug report at 
http://code.google.com/p/soundflower/issues/detail?id=113

This is absurdly frustrating.

i'm afraid the same thing happened to me and no work arounds had any effect.

underfortunately, no one from Soundflower has ever addressed or commented, even 
though this issue is all over the internet.

i actually had to buy an small soundcard to carry around with me, even just to 
use the headphones.

they sadly do not seem to be taking any interest or responsibility :(

it's unfortunate, as it could be a great software, and of course wonderful it's 
free...but when it actually breaks your equipment and costs you more 
money...I'm gon to be writing to Google code who is hosting the download now...

Had similar problem with SF and 10.7.2. SF install froze, taking all system 
audio with it. Thankfully, force quitting the install, restarting, then running 
the uninstall restored my audio.

I successfully uninstalled soundflower (and audacity, which I had installed to 
support soundflower). Then restarted my computer. Then selected audio port for 
sound output in 'system preferences' 'sound'  My headphones reappeared as an 
option.
And headphones began working again. When I unplug them, the sound automatically 
comes out of my internal speakers. It worked!

that's great...i wish that had worked for me!  i had to buy a small external 
USD sound card to use.  

glad these tricks are working for others though.  i keep hearing horror stories 
about the different ways Soundflower messed up systems.  wish i had heard them 
before i installed...

Guys... its really simple.  Just go to audio midi in system until and click the 
cog and change your system audio to built in audio.

it would indeed be great if it were that simple...but as mentioned, after the 
first soundflower installation, that was no longer an option.  literally no 
longer an option...if you go there when a jack is plugged into the headphone 
out, it is grayed out.  this was, of course, the first place checked.

hmm that really sucks because I had the same issue, and being arrogant I 
assumed my solution would work for everyone.  I had no audio, but an option; 
however, i have Lion 10.7.2 and installed version 1.5.2 of soundflower - let it 
be known it is no longer a permanent issue when everything is up to date.

Wait, so the SYSTEM audio was grayed out as well as the headphones?  I switched 
to the buil-in audio option by making it "Use this Device for sound output".

the system output works for internal speakers...but no headphones when a 
headphone jack is plugged in.  at that point it turns to optical and stays 
optical.

honestly if i were you i won't risk installing it...as you can read from the 
forum, it's really buggy and messing up a lot of people's systems.  meanwhile, 
there is no one taking responsibility for it...so sadly you won't get much help 
here.  but good luck either way!

Same Problem Here!!!!! Cant use my headphones anymore and have very loud 
strange sound sometimes from the speakers..

i'm sorry to hear there are more and more victims :(

the only way i have been able to get around it without shelling out money i 
don't have is to buy a cheap USB sound card to plug my headphones or other 
output jacks in.  it's not ideal, but they are small, cheap, and of course you 
can get even more decent sound.

good luck to us all, the creators of soundflower certainly don't seem to be 
taking any responsibility.  it really should be just taken off the web for the 
amount of trouble it's causing (and yes, for those of you who have no trouble 
with it...yet...it's awesome.  someone should develop a similar application 
without the bugs and quirks).

I got the audio issues fixed by following these steps:
1. run the uninstaller that comes as part of the soundflower dmg
2. delete or move files from the /Library/Preferences/Audio directory
3. restart the system and your good to go

i'm glad that worked for you, and hope it works for others.  for me, sadly, 
didn't work after many attempts.  the only way i could get the output to work 
is getting a small USB sound card, which is a work around...still not fixed.

Same problem! Except it makes the speakers digital out!  Tried uninstalling 
w/script and reinstalling several times, and it will only let me select digital 
output

Hey everyone,

Just freaked out after the same thing happened to me, spent over an hour 
installing, uninstalling, AppZapping, terminalling....

What ended up working for me....I plugged and unplugged headphones in a few 
times. Eventually I started getting sound out of them. Then the red light 
inside the headphone jacked turned on (which for the 1st time boded well as 
this has happened before) then kept doing it until I finally got the sound back 
in my MacBook Pro speakers.

Phew, hope this helps...if it doesn't, good luck....

I second the method suggested above. Unplugging and plugging the minijack 
eventually brought the built in speakers back as an output source. Once this 
happened, the master levels weren't greyed out anymore and I had total control 
of Soundflower parameters again.

 A different easy fix.

After trying all the methods above I just decided to uninstall sound flower.  
Unfortunately, the sound flower files were still in the pathway 
/Library/Preferences/Audio directory

No matter how many times I deleted them, they always came back so I just 
reinstalled OSX.

My computer seemed less buggy, and the soundlfower files were gone, but I still 
couldn't use headphones.  Then I stumbled upon an easy fix.  

1) Open system preferences
2) Click on Sound
3) On the bottom of the window (just above the output volume bar) change it 
says "Use Audio Port For: Sound Input"
4)  Change it so it says "Use Audio Port For: Sound Output".
5) Test your headphones

Maybe I didn't even need to do all the uninstall stuff if this was the only 
problem, but I'm not risking putting sound flower on again.  If anybody still 
has it installed and this fixes the headphone issue, let me know.  In the mean 
time, I'm glad sound flower is gone.  My computer was running pretty slow.  I'm 
not sure if it was sound flower, but the program seems pretty buggy.

I was absolutely horrified to find my headphones weren't working like everyone 
else ! But the last comment ^^^ (#31 )  Fixed the problem for me, I'm on OSX 
10.6.8 and Sound Flower was the lastest version

There is a fix for this...
Utilities > Audio Midi Setup > [Right Click] Built-In Output > Use this device 
for sound output
(Repeat the same for headphones as and when required).

I just ran into this problem and ran through most of the suggested fixes. 
Uninstalling didn't work, deleting the audio preferences didn't work, changing 
inputs via the sound preferences didn't work, the audio MIDI setup didn't work, 
but manually unplugging my speakers and plugging them back in a few times did 
somehow. 

I'm not sure if unplugging alone fixed it or if that only works in conjunction 
with one of the earlier fixes I tried, but that process brought my audio back. 
I'm on OSX 10.10 with Sound Flower 1.6.6b.

Its easy! Just uninstall soundflower from the uninstall thing that came with it 
(if you just deleted it just by draging it to the trash, just install it again 
and use the uninstall program that comes with it). Then if the audio 
outputs/inputs still isn't gone, turn the mac off and on again. It worked for 
me.

I fixed it. After many attempts, my detail has been reboot with the unplugged 
headset.

Mac Mini - Yosemite 10.10

1 - I uninstalled Soundflower using the "uninstaller" that comes in DMG.
2 - I deleted files in the folder /Library/Preferences/Audio
3 - I unplugged the headset. (Important!)
4 - I restart the Mac.

This worked.

No luck on anything here...chances are if you were able to get yours to work 
just by a restart after uninstalling, you didn't have the same problem some of 
us did.

Upon extensive research, I'm afraid there is no fix for this. It doesn't seem 
to have happened to enough people to warrant attention for a fix. I've lived 
with it on this computer it's entire life using a USB sound card...cheap and 
small with good sound, annoying but fine. I suggest that to those who do have 
this actual problem.

It's time for this computer to retire anyway. Good luck to all, and thanks for 
the advice anyway...glad for those of you who have resolved your problem, and 
for those with this one, just get a cheap USB sound card.
