Mount network drive #23

Hi Benjamin,

It seems you are hitting Google's DNS server instead of the Uni's DNS server. This suggests someone has hardcoded your DNS settings on the system.

Google's DNS

nslookup dns.google
Server: 127.0.0.53
Address: 127.0.0.53#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: dns.google
Address: 8.8.8.8
Name: dns.google
Address: 8.8.4.4
Name: dns.google
Address: 2001:4860:4860::8844
Name: dns.google
Address: 2001:4860:4860::8888

However the DNS, values from the IP command show the Uni's DNS servers which are obtain from your DHCP network connection.

IP4.DNS[1]: 128.250.66.5
IP4.DNS[2]: 128.250.201.5

root@9870d-920044-l:~# nslookup 128.250.66.5
5.66.250.128.in-addr.arpa name = ns-resolver1.unimelb.edu.au.
5.66.250.128.in-addr.arpa name = idns-266.unimelb.net.au.

Authoritative answers can be found from:

Just check the contents of this configuration file to validate your DNS settings

cat /etc/resolv.conf

The three last lines on DHCP SOE ubuntu 20.04 system have these values

nameserver 127.0.0.53
options edns0
search unimelb.edu.au

And I suspect your values will differ and have the IP address 8.8.8.8 in there.

This means that the DNS on system is searching Google's DNS for a Unimelb hostname and asking it to resolve it, which could explain the timeout values. In this case I'd suggest you try the following command which should bypass DNS system and go straight to the host itself using the hosts/file shares IP address.

UoM-File.unimelb.edu.au
smbclient -L //172.27.70.11 -U callenb@unimelb.edu.au

UoM
smbclient -L //172.20.1.43 -U callenb@unimelb.edu.au

I can't log into the system using any of the standard UoM admin accounts so it's definitely a BYO device, plus the hostname doesn't meet UoM standards. Currently we are just in the pilot test phase of the Ubuntu 20.04 and 18.04 SOE is the current stable release.

Cheers

Antony

@bdcallen

  1. Try the commands at the bottom of Antony's email.
  2. Check the contents of /etc/resolv.conf and post here.
iangow commented 4 years ago

The IT guy I'm conversing with suggests that this is because our system is hitting Google's DNS rather than Unimelb's, and that someone probably hard-coded this. Do you know of any reason why this might be the case?

I don't recall changing those things, but we had trouble with getting the machine on the network at some point and /etc/resolv.conf might have changed then. I'm not sure we want to mess with the DNS settings while we're out of the office.

bdcallen commented 3 years ago

@iangow Here's the last correspondence I had with Antony. My comment below his contains the running of cat /etc/resolv.conf, smbclient -L //172.27.70.11 -U callenb@unimelb.edu.au, and smbclient -L //172.20.1.43 -U callenb@unimelb.edu.au. The first shows that both IP addresses were in resolv.conf, the latter two showed that hardcoding the IP address worked for looking at the share folders available

Hi Benhamin,

The ip address starting with 127 is a loop back ip, it's an internal ip range for the system. If you do an nslookup localhost you should see an returned ip address of 127.0.0.1.

You may notice the system times out when looking for sites, network shares, etc that have the unimelb.edu.au domain value as your DNS is pointing to Google and ask it where something.unimelb.edu.au is instead of asking the UoM DNS where this something is.

However this might have a purpose so you should consult your manager about it.

Is there anything else I can help you with or are you happy for me to close off this ticket?

Cheers

Antony

University of Melbourne Service Notification

Hello Antony,

A new comment has been added to an incident for Benjamin Callen.

Issue description: Linux - Unable to map fileshare path

Comments:

29/09/2020 16:56:43 - Benjamin Callen Additional comments (Customer visible) Hi Antony,

It seems both IP addresses are there

 bdcallen@igow-z640:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
 # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
 # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
 # 127.0.0.53 is the systemd-resolved stub resolver.
 # run "systemd-resolve --status" to see details about the actual nameservers.

 nameserver 8.8.8.8
 nameserver 127.0.0.53
 search unimelb.edu.au

Also, bypassing the DNS worked

 bdcallen@igow-z640:~$ smbclient -L //172.27.70.11 -U callenb@unimelb.edu.au

@bdcallen So just hard-code the IP address for now and check that you can backup there. (For example, try #20.) Then close this issue.
