Should get these thoughts written down as an issue,

Here are the two candidates I am looking at, as far as tachs are concerned:

Around 5mA draw, excluding power drawn by readout supply, but that should be tiny since the ESP32 is CMOS.

Through-hole hall-effect sensors, since they have a sensitivity axis conveniently perpendicular to the board plane!
