It should be possible to domesticate each species of animal, and have one 
follow you around as a pet, giving you some kinds of benefits. We should 
brainstorm this: How to domesticate things, what each thing does, etc.

Interesting idea.  Currently, you can kind of domesticate some of the animals 
by putting them in "pens."  For example, if there is a piece of grassland 
enclosed by forest, you can chase cows into the enclosed land and they will be 
effectively penned in.  Having a more intentional idea of pets, however, could 
be cool.
