npm install -g opentest
will always install the latest stable version (the one that is currently tagged "latest"). This assumes that the latest stable version available has the same major version number as the one you currently have (e.g. you have v1.2.4 and the latest is v1.3.8). In order to avoid backward compatibility issues, npm will NOT perform the upgrade if your currently installed major version is different than the latest stable version.npm install -g opentest@beta
will install the beta version, which is the most recent version, but might sometimes contain severe bugs. It only makes sense to use this version if you're in urgent need of a bug fix or a feature that was introduced in that version.
