6 years ago we have leaflet integrated since 8c2afdab388cfd054b41581633b224009cd2c527 , but note that googlemaps api which inaturalist uses has some advantages over our current ESRI basemap tile. Namely the switching from street view to satellite view. We could incorporate this into our app by using:

It is now possible to access a rich library of java packages within R for making interactive maps using the R package leaflet. It looks like it could be very useful for our app.
