Sorry for this massive PR. There isn't actually a whole lot of noticeable changes, it mostly just fixes the issues with connectivity in the deployed version, as well as the locally hosted containerized version (using docker-compose).
I had a bunch of conflicts when I did my git pull --rebase upstream master, so y'all might see the same thing.
