RO_0000087 has role
- add textual definition: a relation between an independent continuant (the
host) and a role, in which the role specifically depends on the host for its
existence
- add editor note: A host can have many roles, and its roles can exist for
different periods of time, but none of its roles can exist when the host does
not exist. A role need not be realized at all the times that the role exists.
- add example of usage: this person has role this investigator role (more
colloquially: this person has this role of investigator)

RO_0000081 role of
- add textual definition: a relation between a role and an independent
continuant (the host), in which the role specifically depends on the host for
its existence
- add editor note: A role inheres in its host at all times for which the role
exists, however the role need not be realized at all the times that the role
exists.
- add alternative term: is role of
- add example of usage: this investigator role is a role of this person

maybe say "this person plays the role of" for the example of usage?

No, I think we should stick to "having" language for roles. The BFO2 Reference
specifically rejects the language of "playing" in section 3.7.5:

"Having a role vs. playing a role

An entity is sometimes said to play a role, as when a passenger plays the role
of a pilot on a commercial plane in an emergency, or a pyramidal neuron plays
the role occupied by a damaged stellar neuron in the brain; but neither the
person nor the pyramidal neuron have those roles. BFO 2.0 only specifies the
has_role relation."

I guess I can see this point as well; however I do believe that this is one
understanding of the language "playing a role" vs "having a role". I guess I
would rather say "this person plays the role of investigator" than "this person
has this role of investigator".

Maybe use bears then? Or add an editor note?

Updated to use 'bearer' instead of 'host':

RO_0000087 has role
- add textual definition: a relation between an independent continuant (the
bearer) and a role, in which the role specifically depends on the bearer for
its existence
- add editor note: A bearer can have many roles, and its roles can exist for
different periods of time, but none of its roles can exist when the bearer does
not exist. A role need not be realized at all the times that the role exists.
- add example of usage: this person has role this investigator role (more
colloquially: this person has this role of investigator)
- move domain from ro-edit.owl to core.owl: 'independent continuant'

RO_0000081 role of
- add textual definition: a relation between a role and an independent
continuant (the bearer), in which the role specifically depends on the bearer
for its existence
- add editor note: A role inheres in its bearer at all times for which the role
exists, however the role need not be realized at all the times that the role
exists.
- add alternative term: is role of
- add example of usage: this investigator role is a role of this person
