This is a WIP attempt to make the system work with node v17 and npm v8.

These upgrades have not been fully tested and this PR should be placed on hold until such testing has taken place.

Closing this PR as the generator has not been tested with version 17 of nodejs. The latest LTS version of node is only 16.13.
