For some pointers, 0 should be kept as a NULL pointer. We can solve this by the following solutions:

Header blocks starting the actual root > 0 (+ might be useful to keep some more metadata)
1-based indexing (involves a lot of -1 operations to get the actual block address)
Using a flag to denote absence

For reference we chose to use header blocks.
