Finicky slate options across a few scripts, plus other small changes while I was in mmfunctions

(leaving this open to remind myself what I was doing - I think it's still relevant but the code it's based on has changed. Will clean up when I'm back from winter break!)

Closing because code is outdated and messy; still could use fixing but with a new PR
