medianeuroscience / icore

This project introduces the interface for Communication Research (iCoRe) to access, explore, and analyze the Global Database of Events, Language and Tone (GDELT; Leetaru & Schrodt, 2013). GDELT provides a vast, open source, and constantly updated repository of online news and event metadata collected from tens of thousands of news outlets around the world. Despite GDELT’s promise for advancing communication science, its massive scale and complex data structures have hindered efforts of communication scholars aiming to access and analyze GDELT. We thus developed iCoRe, an easy-to-use web interface that (a) provides fast access to the data available in GDELT (b) shapes and processes GDELT for theory-driven applications within communication research and (c) enables replicability through transparent query and analysis protocols.

iCore data end on 02/05/2021 #43

Hi Musa and iCore team. Thank you for getting iCore up and running again! In case you are not aware, allow me to mention that (as of today) the GDELT data accessed via the iCore GKG query end on 02/05/2021. I confirmed this with searches on few different topics (health care, domestic economy, and environment, in U.S. media). I don't know if this is a problem per se but I wanted to let you know in case you have been expecting the data to be more up to date than this.

@profkenm Thank you very much for using this service! We'll be slowly building on this and making sure things are fine-tuned as much as possible. That said, I know you have been wanting to access some data for some time now. Could you let me know the parameters for the data you need? While the API gets fine-tuned I can provide your requested data to you via iCoRe's backend relatively fast so you can proceed with your research. Let me know!

Thank you Musa. Much appreciated. Right now I am trying to analyze news media coverage of Covid-19 in the U.S. I was successful in downloading U.S. media data from iCore, where the search selected on the issue of "health care," going back to January, 2020, and extending through the end of January, 2021. I successfully downloaded these data one month at a time.

However, as I mentioned, when searching on (seemingly) anything in the GKG via iCore, the data appear to end on 02/05/2021 (as of a few days ago). At present, if possible, I would like to access these data up until "now" (or whatever is the availability window in GDELT). For me this would include February 2021 and (perhaps) part of March 2021 on the search I mentioned.

Again thank you for your consideration and thank you for iCore!

Ken

@profkenm That should be a straightforward fix. I have updated the database to reflect the latest timestamp. You can access it through iCoRe as before!

Thanks Musa - thanks for the fix - it works.
