Reasoning for anti-war manifest

I'm opening this issue to serve as a single place to serve any (possibly constructive) discussions, towards the anti-Russian invasion on Ukraine manifest that's part of this package.

As I mentioned in https://github.com/medikoo/es5-ext/commit/28de285ed433b45113f01e4ce7c74e9a356b2af2 whole point of this manifest, is to urge all Russians that see it, to seek reliable sources of information of what's going on, as you won't get it from official media sources in Russia.

It's very important for you and the whole world that you realize what's really going on.

Note that I'm affected by the situation directly, and it's why I've decided to put this manifest in.

Reiterating what I've mentioned before:

So far, my country (Poland) has welcomed 1.5 million people from war-stricken Ukraine. They are ordinary, regular people, like you and me. Now frightened and without a place to live.

My friends regularly take a car, fill it with basic needs, go to the border, leave the products, and take Ukrainians who fleed their homes, offering them a free ride to one of the major cities. Some others take shifts to help manage situations in large public shelters. I personally let two Ukrainian women stay in one of my flats.

Your army is bombing civilian buildings, and hospitals, killing women and children. AFAIK, they see it the only way to crush the spirit of Ukrainians.

On the other hand, many people in Ukraine do not understand this (especially in big cities): they are brainwashed with promises of a beautiful life and do not notice that industry is not developing, the urban environment is not getting better, and pensions are ridiculously small.

A country in which citizens cannot be study in their own language, in which all oppositional journalists have either been intimidated or killed, in which there is not a single TV channel with an alternative point of view, cannot be called democratic.

We are firmly connected and in my Russian company there is a lot people from neighboring countries, including Ukraine. And I don't even mentioning disrupting trust to free software.

@medikoo It’s admirable that you care, however I feel this initiative doesn’t take into the account quite a few very important things:

• You somehow seem to assume Russians to be this monolith instead of ~145 million of vastly different persons with different personal experiences, social standing, access to information, world views, etc. Instead you seem to see us as undivided entity, and a bit dumb at that. It’s somewhat understandable but still peculiar to me.
• Speaking from personal experience — I don’t know anyone in my circle who isn’t reading multiple news sources, some of which are banned in Russia (sometimes, have been banned for months/years). This message doesn’t tell me or anyone like me anything new. Typically people like me are already opposing the government via our own different ways of which I won’t say anything for the sake of my personal safety.
• A lot of people in Russia have ties to Ukraine in the form of friends, family or distant relatives and keep in touch with them, especially now. Personally, I have multiple friends, who give me information from the first hands. I don’t need news outlets to know what’s going on.
• However, if a Russian person doesn’t want to believe something, no message in their console or anywhere else, however truthful, will convince them. One of the strongest subconscious survival tactics is joining the aggressor. This is what people do because deep down they believe it will allow them to survive. It isn’t remedied by truth (of which it is said that truth is the first thing to die in a war) but by years of psychotherapy. Years.
• The social dynamics in Russia are very different from other countries. Our society is historically very apolitical due to the 100 years of heavy repressions. We have a generational trauma which sadly can’t be overcome by reading news or calls to action. I wish it was otherwise. But it’s like you’re asking a person who got badly burnt to make an open fire.
• However, my generation — who are lucky enough to have grown up in a bit of a different country from what even our parents knew — has protested for over ten years and it only led to injuries, psychological damage, prison sentences and deaths. Sometimes those deaths weren’t even on the Russian soil. I am not even talking about those people’s children, elderly parents and other dependants left without any support. Frankly, there is a point after which you kind of pause and start asking yourself whether your sacrifice will actually make a change or just be one more item on the long list of sacrifices.
• Russia quite literally has an internal army of equivalent size to the “normal“ one for protests suppression. It’s armed, sure of their impunity and extremely aggressive. Same goes for the police. Read up about recent arrests in Brateevo and the way protestors were treated. There is an audio recording as well.
• One of the reasons why Russian government doesn’t care about protests is because of the type of authoritarian regime we have. It relies on resources and elites. Thus the change could only come from within those elites. Government is deaf to protests not because there aren’t enough of them but because the political and social structure in Russia allows them to be. Regardless of the size of the protest.
• Russia isn’t Ukraine in 2013. The reason why anything like Maidan is likely impossible in Russia is because Maidan has happened in Ukraine all those years ago. Our government watched and learned. And then again in Belarus. And then again in Kazakhstan. Whatever worked before will unlikely work again.
• I have an international family, half of which lives in the US. It’s quite baffling that not even a single person from that side of the family knew of the 8 years long ongoing conflict in Donbass. American media just somehow forgot to report that the same way they “forget” to report many things. Russian media lies, yes, we’ve known that for years now. But other media don’t mention crucial pieces of information, which isn’t an entirely right thing to do, too. Having access to it doesn’t necessarily mean that the person will get access to the truth. All media distort reality in their own ways, all governments do, and I love the way Tom Gauld summarised it in his little cartoon. There is no truth truth out there currently, if ever. Everyone has an agenda.

I could go on but this is getting a bit lengthy, and I still have work tasks to attend to. What I am trying to say is that, while I get that you’re trying to help in any way you can, I feel this will not bring you the results you hope for. I feel as a person from Russia I have a bit more of an insight than you about Russian society, politics, mentality and why this call to action will most likely never work. It will sadden me deeply if GitHub gets banned in Russia because others decide to follow in your footsteps and this gets big enough to reach our government which is eager to ban anything not Russian. Despite this, I understand this is your project so you can do whatever you want with it. Take care.

Lets just hope that maintainers can make the change fast enough. This repository lost all reputation it had and no one knows what will happen next. Backdoor for russian services? Troll messages? Not worth a risk

Russian government is no different from your government in Poland, USA or any other in so called "free world". It is the serving hand of big capital, not the people. Only organized people can force government to acknowledge their interests. Just as in Russia, people in Poland are disorganized, so horrible things ( in which Poland participated) like war and occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq are made possible, but I never blamed ordinary people from Poland or USA for this atrocities. Problem is that when your government started an invasion of Ukraine, the western world decided that it cannot go like that anymore. There are loads of ongoing sanctions, targeted both at your elite (hopefully) and regular Russians, as you need to finally move.

It appears to us, nothing will change until you're put in the corner, and my manifest is just another water drop, that’s part of that waterfall. It disturbs you, annoys you, and forces you to discuss this, as we do it here now.

If it’ll turn out to be one of the reasons why GitHub and npm will be banned in your country, I hope it’ll be just another trigger for you to think about how to recover from this insane situation your government put on you. Due to those sanctions, and small manifests as mine, you cannot have a normal, prosperous, peaceful life, and you should not when your army, with your mostly silent consent, invades Ukraine. I hope you see that.

We have a popular point of view in Russia that anyone can replace Putin and everything will get better. This is a completely naive and infantile opinion, which is proven by an example of Ukraine. Zelensky fiailed all his campaign promises.

We also have a popular Navalny, who once called himself a lawyer. This person has absolutely no management experience in either business or government. And as a lawyer, he is useless. He spends donations for personal purposes — this is not even denied by him (Now there is an open trial of him, this is public information.). It should be clear to people that he doesn't belong in the presidential chair, but people without critical thinking believe everything.

I also would like to point you to the fact that you're basically telling us that western propaganda is more veracious than Russian propaganda. Quick fact of the day: no propaganda is good and you can't justify one and denounce the other.

Quick fact number two: developers in Russia ARE aware of what's going on, they have different opinions and views. And, SURPRISE, some of them, not many, don't like, but are in favor of what is going on.

Quick fact number three: you're so hypocritical in what you are saying, because what's happening is now close to YOUR border. You might want to invest some time and read about wars in the past few decades and ask yourself some dialectical questions which you, as a developer, are capable of, I suggest. Look deeper.

Message to the author and all who reside on this thread: developers of the world, let us not be divided by some political speculations. Let's make the wold better, as we always did. Let us do our job.

The manifest idea was silly. Open-source project is not the place for it, and developers usually can get the information they need.

As a member of the developer community, I urge you to separate politics from free code. I see author's actions as an act of extremism. I'm calling to immediately stop such malicious actions.
