The canonical way to handle this, according to the Django Docs (http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/howto/deployment/modpython/#basic-configuration) is to add the project directory to the PYTHONPATH using the PythonPath directive in the WSGI configuration.

Fixed this with my fabric-installed instances.
