Example Question #34 : Newtonian Mechanics

The slingshot is a popular attraction at many amusement parks. During the ride, riders sit in a ball and are propelled vertically by a massive slingshot. A certain sling shot uses 25 springs, each with a constant of . If the springs are stretched  and the ball reaches a maximum height of  when no riders are in it, what is the total mass of the ball?

I spent 20 minutes introducing myself to work and energy.

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I spent almost 2 hours watching videos and taking notes on Potential and Kinetic energy. I was having trouble understanding everything at first like with W=F*d is F the net force?

I will practice next on Varsity https://www.varsitytutors.com/ap_physics_1-help/kinetic-energy

Then I will move on to conservation of energy.

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I spent about 20 minutes on mastery, 25 minutes on practicing what I already know about energy and work, and just oven an hour on work and energy video 7 notes.

I definitely find this subject of work and energy a little bit more confusing. I think I'm struggling right now with the system, what things do I account for and what things don't I account for. It's not intuitive yet.

I did have a nice moment when I started to understand conservation of energy today.

Next time I'll continue on to Thermal Energy

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I spent about 1:30 hours working on Work and Power.

Next time, springs: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/physics/work-and-energy/hookes-law/a/what-is-hookes-law

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I worked for about 25 minutes on hooke's law and young's modulus (Springs). It's not making intuitive sense though, the reading I did on Khan Academy was not as clear as I would like it to be.

Next time I think I will google another resource on hooke's law and young's modulus and try to understand it better.

I worked for about an 45 minutes on hooke's law and young's modulus. Next time i'll continue reading https://www.khanacademy.org/science/physics/work-and-energy/hookes-law/a/what-is-elastic-potential-energy What about real elastic materials?

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I spent about 2 hours on Spring and Work learning and practice. I'm still not completely comfortable with all these subjects but I'm getting better with each practice.

Next time, mechanical advantage: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/physics/work-and-energy/mechanical-advantage/v/introduction-to-mechanical-advantage

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I spent about 30 minutes on mechanical advantage. Now I'm off to do the quiz.

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I just took the quiz https://www.varsitytutors.com/high_school_physics-energy-and-work-problems-results-d8859688-8ee9-4b84-9216-2658bd04a0b5. It took me about an hour to answer 40 questions, but I got 100% 🤗

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

I got a spring potential energy question wrong during my maintenance. Now i'm going to move this back into the Learned swim lane

meech-ward commented 7 years ago

Today I did the khan questions as a mastery challenge. I have a weak spot when it comes to springs, especially the spring constant, I seem to forget it exists. My future practice will involve more spring questions.

w = 1/2 k x^2
