Using "Other" Desktop Environments

I followed @meefik's instructions (on his blog) to set up GNOME and Cinnamon. Connecting to VNC simply returns a grey screen with an X cursor. Trying to start the desktop session from the terminal returns "Unable to open X display".

Also, how do I get audio working?
