Crown with no actions in hand #440

[title] should be counted as a treasure, and because of that, action phase should not occur.

dominionator commented 7 years ago

This is a tricky situation, since technically the rules allow for playing the Crown as the last action before starting your buy phase. Can anyone think of a situation in which you'd want to play crown as the last action in your action phase instead of in your buy phase?

EDIT: added a 3rd bullet point. Add more to the 2nd 1st bullet point is marked as being not a valid case for this issue.

Oh, so this is a matter of convenience! While I've been "burned" by accidently playing a lone Crown as an action instead of skipping that and leaving it for the Buy phase, I would keep it as is due to the following situations (including but not limited to): --Playing a Crown as an action to make Peddler cheaper can be better than playing a Treasure twice.
For example, 6 Coppers + 1 Crown. @transportowiec96 might be right about Crown still counting towards Peddlers played during Buy phase. Will omit this if someone can confirm.

--If you have the +1 Card player token (from Adventures) on the Crown pile, even though you'll still get the +1 card when played as a Treasure (and get to play the new card if it's a Treasure), playing it during your action phase can let you draw an Action that you can now play. Well, you're out of actions, but we can amend that by placing your +1 Action player token on it as well, or having a "durated" Fishing Village

--If you have your +1 Coin player token on Crown, and you have no Treasures, or no Treasures that generate coins, or you do not want to play certain Treasures, then playing a Crown as an action for the +$1 could be preferable Some examples with the "bad Treasures"... Loan, Contraband, Talisman.

Doesn't the Crown count as an Action card in play, even if it was played in the Treasure phase? edit: (for making the Peddler cheaper)

dominionator commented 7 years ago

A Crown played at any time does indeed count as an Action in play for Peddler's cost. The key to remember is that you don't play Crown as an "Action" or as a "Treasure". It's always both types. Its type determines when you can play it. Since it's an Action card, if you play it during your Action phase, you must spend 1 +Action to do so. Since it's also a Treasure, if you play it during your buy phase, you can do so for freely as when you play other Treasures.

So, with that in mind, @ayao44 's point about Peddler doesn't apply. However, the second case of having +1 Card token on Crown with extra +Actions is a very valid (albeit rare) case in which you'd want to play Crown at the end of your Action phase with the Crown as your only action in hand. Especially true if you know the top card on your deck is an Action card. The other case of the +1 Coin token doesn't seem to apply since you aren't required to play a Treasure or Action card upon playing Crown (in both cases it's "You may...").

Actually, with my 3rd bullet point, you could instead play the Crown as a Treasure and still get the +1 coin from the +1 Coin (player) token, so that makes that inapplicable.

I suggest not to highlight the crown. If only crowns are left in hand the button "play action" is disabled because no card is selected. You can play a crown at last by selecting but you don't play it inadvertently.

dominionator commented 7 years ago

@androminionfan That sounds like a great way to help prevent accidentally playing the crown during the action phase. You'd still have to press None to move on to the Buy phase, but I think that's reasonable.

Thanks for the suggestion!

+1 to @androminionfan's suggestion.

Another case I thought up of is if Enchantress is in play. Playing it during your Buy phase as your first action card will yield you +1 card and +1 action instead. However, given average case scenarios, you're better off playing it in your Action phase instead, for the same reasons as outlined with the +1 card player token passage.
