REVISION 1 -added some recipes which are necessary to preserve flow, as whithout them the player may not be able to advance technologically
REVISION 2 -clarified some things in the intro -added some new stuff to the ideas section
REVISION 3 -cleaned up the article and added some ideas stuff -re assigned lots of low level reactions to the peoples workbench, workshop was getting to cluttered and crafter was right
REVISION 4 -added some ideas stuff that will hopefully one day be hashed out and added. interesting features which make the workshop system more interactive (thanks frost!)

INTRO
The real centrepiece of our mod is its crafting system, built around a block called the "workshop block". This is where players combine power, resources, and labor tokens to create the various blocks and items that would otherwise involve more than 3 crafting steps. The "workshop block" itself has many different blocks and machines that must be placed nearby it to enable it to build certain things with varying efficiencies. Some blocks are necessary to create advanced technology while others just enable the workshop to create things faster or more efficiently. The ability to create certain things is dictated by the workshop blocks "precision" rating, while the "efficiency" rating determines how fast it works. In addition to laying out the details on the "workshop block" itself this article will also cover the ancillary blocks placement requirements.
DETAILS
I.when placed the workshop block scans a 100x100x100 area to determine two things
A.it looks for other workshop blocks and will not place if there are any
B.it looks for a sufficient number of housing blocks that collectively add up to a housing score of at least 100 or it will not place 1.hovel blocks are worth 5 points 2.homestead blocks are worth 10 points 3.house blocks are worth 20 points 4.apartment blocks are worth 35 points
II.when placed the workshop block runs many different checks in a 40x40x10 area
A.it looks for the following blocks to determine if it can build things in tier 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 1.basic workbench 2.basic casting station 3.basic laboratory

II.after running its checks it calculates the total precision and efficiency ratings of all machines in its scan area

B.efficiency ratings apply a percent based bonus to build speed and a percent based penalty to power usage 1.every 2 efficiency points confers a .1% speed bonus 2.every 2 efficiency points make the construction process use .1% more power 3.every 100 efficiency points grant the user the ability to use an extra labor token on workshop reactions a.extra labor tokens used in this way contribute a 5% speed bonus toward the reaction they were used in b.extra labor tokens used in this way cause the reaction to use 5% more electricity
C.precision ratings apply a numerical bonus to material usage 1.every 1000 precision makes any recipe use 1 less metal ingot
III.in addition to the workshop block itself running checks some of its sub-blocks also run checks (in a 10x10x10 area) to determine if they can be placed

IDEAS
-synergies for workshop blocks -a way to use either excess labor tokens or perhaps skilled labor tokens to create high precision things without the appropriate machine -use workshop system to produce consumer, luxury, industrial and military goods (generic items) which can be traded for raw materials at the town hall -use of skilled labor tokens to produce more advanced machines -use of blueprints to produce most machines and items -grids in workshop machines which let players retool machines to do things better/more efficiently/offer various bonuses, etc (sort of like a minigame?) -if players build just one of every machine they will have an efficiency rating of 12,840, which would confer a speed bonus of 642% or 6.4 times faster and 6.4 times more energy used. if the player then took advantage of the extra labor bonus they would cause things to go another 640% faster or 6.4 faster and 6.4 times more energy used. collectively the reaction would then complete 12.8 times faster and use 12.8 times more power and require 128 extra skilled labor tokens -use a variant of precision that only applies to electronics -certain machines reduce labor token input requirement but increase electricity needs -if players built just one of every machine they will have a precision rating of 9,640
