The left and right turn signals on Kessler to turn onto N/S College Ave. are extremely short only allowing for a maximum of 4 cars. The backups on Kessler in both directions are substantial.
NATHAN SHEETS: Prior to the construction of the RedLine BRT the left turns at the intersection were protected/permissive. This operation would allow vehicles to turn left when they received a green arrow…but also allowed them to turn left when they had a green solid indication. Due to the geometric changes at the intersection and the need to protect the left turns…those protected/permissive had to be converted to permissive only. This change has resulted in a signal timing that can put a strain on other movements through the intersection. I site visit was done earlier in the week and I noted a problem with the timeclocks and a detection problem at the intersection which may have attributed to the backups in question. I unfortunately cannot promise that backups at the intersection will not continue.
I personally have felt that this issue has been improved immensely. Is it safe to close this issue, @DominicBM ? For more strategic/big picture improvements, I expect tickets to stay open for a while but without specific deliverables, I'm not sure what sort of movement on this issue constitutes "closed?"
