Intersection at 46th & Washington Blvd. apparently has an issue as a light with ample accidents. Researching with IMPD now.

Hello,

I live at 46th and Washington and witness dangerous speeding and scary car accidents on a monthly basis. See the attached pic from yesterday (Jan 26) of a dangerous crash that took out the pole and stoplights. Had pedestrians been standing on that corner (and they often are) I shudder to think what could’ve happened.

 As far as I can tell 46th Street is the only through street in MKNA that is governed by stoplights instead of 4-way stops. All other stoplights are on the bordering streets - Kessler, college, 38th and Meridian.

It is not safe for the many walkers and joggers, nor the homeowners who’d like to allow their children to play in the front yard nor the many families that use 46th St to walk to CFI 70.

What can I do to petition for a change to a 4-way stop? Who governs that decision and where do I start?

Thank you in advance for your leadership on behalf of the neighborhood! Shelly Towns IMG_3628

@cmarburger08 response:

Shelly,

Thank you so much for reaching out to MKNA to inform us of this issue and giving us an opportunity to assist. First, let me say how grateful I am that no one was standing at the intersection at the time of this incident.

As far as this light/intersection/corridor is concerned, a few things worthy of note that we've learned on this particular topic: First and foremost, statistically speaking, drivers are more likely to stop at a stop light than at a four-way stop sign. That being the case, I'm not sure that a four-way stop sign would be the best alternative. Every single stop sign in the City of Indianapolis is codified into the City Code. This means it has been endorsed by the Councillor, voted on by the entire City-County Council and installed (or removed) by a majority vote. "Street Change" petitions do exist however, do not apply to stop signs. In order for a stop sign to be installed and/or removed it must meet Federal and State warrants that, in our experience, are near impossible to meet. Moving forward, I have contacted the Traffic Sector with IMPD to gather data on this particular intersection. Often times, looking at the data helps uncover/validate reasons for why something (in this case accidents at this intersection) seem to continue to happen. With that data, we can then go to our Councillor(s) to voice our concerns and ask them what reasonable next steps would be.

Again, thank you for bringing this to our attention, Shelly. I've copied our Infrastructure Committee Co-Chairs, Dominic and Jerrey, on this email so they're aware and can put this particular topic into our tracking/ticketing system. This allows us to track/follow up on this issue consistently - and reference it in the future. We'll keep you in the loop of any progress.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Kind Regards,
