PDF.js is the built-in viewer for Firefox by now. I'd say the performance issues are not there (anymore). Would you simply render it in the main part of the page?
PDF.js seems to [support styling]/https://zenodo.org/record/17392#.WjzLtfZw3ms) (probably via CSS).
Not sure how this relates to the following view when clicking on the icon in the top menu:
Maybe just use PDF.js when clicking the button, but not not when clicking on the link in the right hand side menu?
Looks better, but maybe cannot handle large PDF and it is slow?
