Provide CDE training sessions #713

Whenever the CDE-tailored CEDAR system is deployed and ready for preliminary or final reviews, we will demonstrate it to the stakeholders as needed, focusing in particular on the use of CDEs in CEDAR forms and the corresponding features. For major milestones, the CEDAR team will provide training sessions if these are needed on top of the demonstration. The interactions will teach users proficient use of the tool, so that they can independently assess the use cases.

From Denise:

The purpose of the training is for existing caDSR form builder customers to see how the CEDAR Template Builder works using 11179 type CDEs, and comment on any features they feel are missing to create templates from NCI CDEs that they can import into their own CDMS systems, systems that are Title 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, not for the general researcher trying to create his own data collection instrument, or evecn to collect data. The NCI instance of this would not hold data, we don’t do that at CBIIT, we just hold the design of the form to share across our clinical trial network.

In that light, I’ve highlighted the items to focus on for our training, it’s a subset. Full capabilities of the tool are interesting in the broad sense of research, but that is not our goal for the Form Builder replacement – our Form Builder tool is specifically designed NOT to allow new questions to be created on the fly. We are trying to promote data collection consistency – on the fly new questions goes against our best practices.

For us, creation of new “questions” should only be allowed if an existing CDE does not exist, this is much more complex task than just reusing the CDE, or allowing someone to create something de novo. Our current system separates the creation of the CDEs from creating forms that use them so we can do those kinds of checks for duplicates and reuse existing questions or parts of existing data elements for new questions so data is more compatible. That makes the “forms” tool less complex, it just uses what has already been curated/validated. We can discuss that if you want, but we aren’t looking to allow people to create new data elements with this tool.

If you could organize the training into two parts, 1) aimed at the use of the Template Builder for incorporating existing NCI CDEs and Part 2) creating de novo questions. Then the volunteers who agreed to help us test the tool as possible Form Builder replacement can drop off for part 2 if they are not interested in the other aspects. These folks are clinicians who build clinical trial forms, not researchers who build a data collection instrument for their own purposes.
