Have a mission / vision workshop for DAOstar #157

We should review the milestones established a while back by Isaac, Zargham, and Josh here and decide what the future strategy & vision for DAOstar should be in the next year.

We have some resources allocated and upcoming + some runway, so let's make sure we spend our time wisely.

Let's do this next week. We can combine the BD + Strike Team calls to do this.

Before we do this, let's send out a survey or a doc where everybody can write down their thoughts on the mission, vision, and strategy.

  1. Aman + Eugene work on this together, we forked the old Metagov Mission/Vision survey into a new "DAOstar Mission, Vision, and Strategy" survey. The survey needs to be edited to incorporate strategy discussions about the best way that DAOstar can support the DAO ecosystem, not just mission and vision.
  2. We will send it to key DAOstar people as well as post in the DAOstar One chat. Make sure to engage key stakeholders.
  3. Do a small, intensive review + discussion at a future DAOstar BD + Strike Team call (probably Oct. 25).
  4. We followed up with a full roundtable discussion on this in early November. Question raised: should we focus on sustainability or impact. No clear takeaways though on direction.

We had this discussion last week, will be continuing in the next roundtable.

Next step, Josh is going to organize a separate call Jake, maybe Q, Moloch, Aragon, Uniswap, Maker, ENS, Gitcoin, etc. to discuss future of the DAO ecosystem. To be clear, this conversation is not about pushing 4824 or any other standard, it is about larger DAO ecosystem strategy.

Josh led a future of DAOs workshop that discussed some of these topics. November 15, 2023 in Istanbul.

Notes:

Open discussion … Governance minimization? Or at least, governance maximization doesn’t work. To expand DAO, we need to pay attention to people that actually have resources. Governing protocols is important. We don’t need DAOs anymore as a word, people get lots of things out of DAOs than governance or on-chain voting. We need ethical alternatives that are NOT corporations. We shouldn’t be leaning in that direction. BUT we are just copying corporations! A bunch of people just coming in and swaming doesn’t work! DAOs have been disappointing, look at collective coordination like, subreddits in Hyperloop, or Wallstreet Bets… but DAOs are just building small treasuries governed like corporations. We haven’t invented anything new. We can’t just wrap everything in a legal wrapper, we’re missing the point of autonomous organizations. We have learned for sure that people (especially adults) cannot self-coordinate. You need another question: how to use and redistribute CPRs. How can DAOs solve that?... There is no clarity in what direction we want to push as a space, what will be beneficial… we need a common understanding of what has been done before… Ecosystem is very US + EU heavy, what about Asia and Africa? … … Governance research round -> governance minimization (more in the direction of corporatization, or at least better corpos) Document swarm intelligence online, communalities + differences How do we tap into Wallstreet Bets -> Ammar … Helena -> Major coordination problems If you think that you can do this better than me, help me define a better governance system for DAOstar.
