When the user returns to a Metamaps tab, open the map info box to remind them of the context. #646

I am thinking this would be a nice enhancement... in contrast to what you need to do now -> either click on the map info icon... or try and determine the name from the first few characters shown on your browser tab (this is not an option though if you are like me and keep many tabs open)

I like to keep many maps open when I am mapping, so being able to quickly see the map name at a glance is something I would find useful so that I can keep track of my context more easily... (This will also apply in future cases where we enable nested metamaps to fluidly warp you into other maps by a quick map interaction)

This also strikes me as a good candidate for a user preference

@Bortseb do you think this was resolved by your map title PR #655 ?

Bortseb commented 8 years ago

No, not entirely... Related but distinct issues... If I have so many tabs open that I can't see the titles anyways, or I pin a MM tab because I am using it a lot, then I can't use the tabs to help me gain context at a glance... I would still like a way to always know the title of the map I am on without having to click the map info button... This will become even more important as we enable even more dynamic switching and zooming in and out of maps (changing of context)... Where reminding yourself of your context quickly will be even more crucial.

My initial thought for where to put it is right below where we have move the Metamaps text by the search bar.

I'm not sure that I'd like this to be up all the time, but I think that a reminder would be cool!! like...when you switch back to the tab, the title or the map info box pops up for a few seconds to remind you...

I am fine with Ishan's suggestion too, if the consensus is that we don't want the map name visible on the page at all times.

Connoropolous commented 8 years ago

I like that option too... we would just need to identify how/when someone brings the tab back into focus
