Invalid "Add 1/Add N" identifiers on iso.org #209

Closed ronaldtse closed 1 year ago

ronaldtse commented 1 year ago

From #206:

iso.org shows these invalid identifiers:

ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 2:1983  https://www.iso.org/standard/6640.html
ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 3:1983  https://www.iso.org/standard/6641.html
ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 4:1984  https://www.iso.org/standard/6642.html
ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 5:1985  https://www.iso.org/standard/6643.html
ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 6:1985  https://www.iso.org/standard/6644.html

On first glance these identifiers seem like “addendum on another addendum”.

They look like this: image

However, I noticed that while there is "ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983”, there is no "ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 1”, which logically should exist if it was an addendum on the addendum.

On closer investigation I found a preview for ISO 1942-1:1989, which supersedes Add 1, Add 4, Add 5, Add 6. https://www.sis.se/api/document/preview/601625/

The relevant screenshot is attached. It says: “ This second edition together with parts 2, 3, 4 and 5 of ISO 1942 cancel and replace the first edition (ISO 1942 : 1983), of which they constitute a technical revision. ISO 1942-1 specifically replaces

a) Section 1 of ISO 1942 : 1983;

b) four addenda to Section 1 of ISO 1942 : 1983, i.e.: ISO 1942 : 1983/ADD 1 : 1983, ISO 1942 : 1983/ADD 4 : 1984, ISO 1942 : 1983/ADD 5 : 1985, ISO 1942 : 1983/ADD 6 : 1985. “

This likely means that the 5 documents should have been fixed as follows:

ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 2:1983 => ISO 1942:1983/Add 2:1983 ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 3:1983 => ISO 1942:1983/Add 3:1983 ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 4:1984 => ISO 1942:1983/Add 4:1984 ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 5:1985 => ISO 1942:1983/Add 5:1985 ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983/Add 6:1985 => ISO 1942:1983/Add 6:1985

I have reported this to TC 106/SC 3 and its TPM.

From Patricia Cook, TPM of TC 106:

My colleagues will look into this and correct the data appropriately…. it seems that an error occurred when we migrated the data.

For the record, this is the full history of ISO 1942:

There were the following standards: ISO 1942-1:1977 Dental vocabulary — List 1: Basic terms ISO 1942-2:1977 Dental vocabulary — List 2: Dental materials ISO 1942-3:1977 Dental vocabulary — List 3: Dental instruments and equipment ISO 1942-4:1976 Dental vocabulary — List 4: Terms associated with testing of dental materials, instruments and equipment

They seem to have been some addendum planned or published: (according to NIST SP 571, but I can’t find them on iso.org, screenshot attached) ISO 1942-1:1977/Add 1 ISO 1942-1:1977/Add 2 ISO 1942-2:1977/Add 1 ISO 1942-3:1977/Add 1 ISO 1942-3:1977/Add 2 ISO 1942-4:1977/Add 1

Then they were combined into: ISO 1942:1983 Dental vocabulary

Then it was amended (these are the ones with wrong identifiers in the ISO Projects database): ISO 1942:1983/Add 1:1983 ISO 1942:1983/Add 2:1983 ISO 1942:1983/Add 3:1983 ISO 1942:1983/Add 4:1983 ISO 1942:1983/Add 5:1984 ISO 1942:1983/Add 6:1985

Then it was split into parts: ISO 1942-1:1989 Dental vocabulary — Part 1: General and clinical terms ISO 1942-2:1989 Dental vocabulary — Part 2: Dental materials ISO 1942-3:1989 Dental vocabulary — Part 3: Dental instruments ISO 1942-4:1989 Dental vocabulary — Part 4: Dental equipment ISO 1942-5:1989 Dental vocabulary — Part 5: Terms associated with testing

Then they were amended (note that ISO 1942-1:1989/Amd 4:1993 is missing from iso.org, I assume there cannot be Amd 5 unless Amd 4 exists): ISO 1942-1:1989/Amd 1:1992 ISO 1942-1:1989/Amd 2:1992 ISO 1942-1:1989/Amd 3:1993 ISO 1942-1:1989/Amd 4:1993 ISO 1942-1:1989/Amd 5:1993 ISO 1942-2:1989/Amd 1:1992 ISO 1942-2:1989/Amd 2:1992 ISO 1942-3:1989/Amd 1:1992 ISO 1942-4:1989/Amd 2:1992

Then combined into: ISO 1942:2009 Dentistry — Vocabulary

Then revised: ISO 1942:2020 Dentistry — Vocabulary

Surprisingly, “ISO 1942-1:1989/Amd 4:1993” is missing from iso.org (Amd 1, 2, 3, 5 are). Maybe ISO/CS might want to verify why it is missing?

It was only “implied” that Amd 4 exist, because there cannot be Amd 5 unless there is Amd 4, and it seems to be included in the Foreword of ISO 1942:2009, which replaced all of them (below screenshot). Amd 4 has to be from 1993 because Amd 3 and Amd 5 are both 1993.

These are not yet fixed on iso.org, let's only close this ticket when they are fixed.

These have all been fixed by ISO (ISO/TC 106/SC 3), as confirmed by Patricia Cook their TPM.

e.g. https://www.iso.org/standard/6644.html
