Unicode is perfectly fine, but less readable. E.g. right now

\begin{quote}
"Here may be found the last words of Joseph~of Arimathea.
He who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the Holy Grail
in the castle of --- Aaaargh."
\end{quote}

produces

[quote]
_____
”Here may be found the last words of Joseph of Arimathea.
He who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the Holy Grail
in the castle of — Aaaargh.”
_____

instead of

[quote]
____
"Here may be found the last words of Joseph of Arimathea.
He who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the Holy Grail
in the castle of — Aaaargh."
