As far as I know we do not have redistributing rights. The user guide contains instructions to download the original FINN datasets. As for the conversion to netCDF, it only says that "compatible with the ForestFire_ml.f90
module". If we can not provide the FINN netCDF file, we could make our conversion script public
It would be good to check if these data are restricted. As we re-format them then it might be okay to provide them as part of EMEP, with a good acknowledgement of course. We could always ask the originators?
Contact info it is at the download link: http://bai.acom.ucar.edu/Data/fire/
PS: I found that the link on the Docs is broken, I'll fix it on the reevant branch
I have asked Christine Wiedinmyer about the copyright today
(part of) The answer from Christine was :
"I understand that many people would like the emissions in NetCDF.
I could potentially create NetCDF formatted files of the fire emissions (I believe that the trash burning emissions are already in NetCDF?) I think I should do it from here, since I update the emissions files every so often (as I did the 2014 files in the past few weeks)."
If we can not release the pre-processed FINN forest fire files, can we release the retrieval/pre-processing scripts?
The open source release is configured for FINN forest fires, but maybe it is easier to get access to GFAS forest fires (ECMWF product for the CAMS50 project). If the case, I can clean up the scripts used for GFAS and share them as part of our tools.
It would be best if the authors of the data (Christine Wiedinmyer) provides the data in Netcdf. We have been in contact (April 2017) and she said "I could potentially create NetCDF formatted files of the fire emissions (I believe that the trash burning emissions are already in NetCDF?) I think I should do it from here, since I update the emissions files every so often" The converting code is not secret, but it is a bit too messy for publication.
I agree it is best if she creates the files, and we can just provide a link. She is well used to netcdf I think, so there is no need for use to provide conversions.
Can we close this now? Any issues in the new 2020 release?

I think that the original question is answered: we will not include our FINN netcdf files on the open source release.
Should FINN forestfires be included in the inputs files? I think it doesn't. Was it a copyright issue? Anyone remember the background for not making those available? @mifads @avaldebe @andagit
