Fix Appveyor failures #313

Hey @bronzdoc,

This PR is an attempt at fixing the Appveyor failures. There are currently (at least) two problems:

For now this is WIP. I'd like to see if it works in Appveyor. It might need more work.

Heads up: This PR has all the commits from #306 so it will be hard to review until that PR is merged.

I'll let you know when it's ready for your review.
