Dear Betsy & Thomas,

I trust this message finds you both well, and I hope you are having a good week thus far. I was referred to contact you by contacts at the Library of Congress regarding Apex’s interest in being added as a commercial supplier for METS/ALTO. Specifically, in regards to the list of suppliers found at the METS website. Apex has been actively supplying METS/ALTO deliverables for a number of years to national libraries and state newspaper programs. We have served as a conversion supplier since the start of the NDNP program well over a decade ago and continue to convert newspapers for dozens of institutions around the globe. Please let me know if you have any questions for me regarding Apex, I look forward to corresponding with you further. Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards, Joel

Hi Joel,

Do you have a preference as to which sub-section of the METS Tools & Utilities page would be most appropriate for Apex. Not knowing much about your services, I am leaning toward “Multi-faceted Tools (commercial)”, but would be happy to consider alternate sections. Also note that some providers are listed in multiple categories such as services and tools.

Could you also send us a preferred title or label and a short blurb about your services/tools, generally no more than a few sentences and include a link to your preferred landing page for the blurb.

Once I get these, I’ll ask the METS Board to review and approve your submission, and we can ask LoC to add it to the web page. We can generally handle all this by email, but the METS Board next meets in teleconference on July 13, so a submission prior to then would allow us to discuss it at that meeting if necessary, but I don’t anticipate any issues.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Tom Habing Technical Co-chair METS Editorial Board

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your email. The “METS Creation Services (commercial digitization services providing METS output)” would be the most appropriate section to list Apex.

Here is a short summary of Apex’s services:

“Apex CoVantage is a Washington, DC based content services company, established in 1988, that specializes in METS/ALTO XML newspaper conversion. Apex serves as the underlying content conversion engine that operates behind the scenes for dozens of state and national newspaper programs around the globe. Apex’s content services are built upon innovative technology that balances the cognitive power of the human mind with the processing power of computers in order to solve complex content challenges.”

Thank you for your consideration, please let me know if there are any questions I can supply further information on.
