Line search to improve convergence and fitting speed.

@JacksonLChin I just blindly copied this from the file I was editing that your poetry installation provided, so I'm not sure if any unrelated changes should be kept. You can merge this once you're confident I didn't break anything. I did check that the line search fitting was working.
