In the elasticsearch logs the 500 error coincides with an IndexOutOfBoundsException. Things to try:

update to the latest elasticsearch
increase file descriptors limit (http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/reference/setup/installation.html)

The error didn't recur. Closing the issue.
