Please consider adding the following child terms to abnormal dopaminergic neuron morphology (MP:0003243)

decreased dopaminergic neuron number syn - reduced dopaminergic neuron number def - fewer than normal numbers of the neurons that utilize dopamine as a neurotransmitter also a child of decreased neuron number with the child loss of dopaminergic neurons (MP:0003244) (although I'm not sure that keeping this term under morphology is appropriate) consider adding the opposite term increased dopaminergic neuron number Although most existing annotations deal with decreased numbers)

ectopic dopaminergic neurons def - abnormal position of one or more of the neurons that utilize dopamine as a neurotransmitter (several existing annotations talk about expansion of the dopaminergic region beyond the normal bounds, this seemed like a good term to cover these annotations)

P.S.. Looking at the annotations to loss of dopaminergic neurons (MP:0003244) many of these deal with either increased or decreased induced loss in chemical models of Parkinson's disease. We may want to create the term: abnormal induced loss of dopaminergic neurons def - anomaly in the response to an agent or stimulus that induces cell death in dopaminergic neurons child of - abnormal neuron physiology possibly with increased and decreased children Addition of this term and the decreased number term may mean that we no longer need the term loss of dopaminergic neurons (MP:0003244).

New terms added: decreased dopaminergic neuron number MP:0011448 increased dopaminergic neuron number MP:0011449 ectopic dopaminergic neurons MP:0011450

Having investigated this for a while, many have used the terms "in/decreased susceptibility to neuronal excitotoxicity" to describe the MPTP induced dopaminergic neuron loss in Parkinsonian models. This is a better term to use, although the number of potential annotations warrant a subterm of this:

in/decreased susceptibility to dopaminergic neuron neurotoxicity MP:0011451 and MP:0011452 SYN:in/decreased susceptibility to dopamine neuron neurotoxicity

greater/less than normal amount of dopaminergic neuronal cell death following exposure to a neurotoxic compound, such as MPTP-induced cell death occurring through interference in mitochondrial metabolism
