Is it appropriate to add this as a new phenotype term or is it more of a "syndrome" (see below)?
The cytokine storm syndrome (CSS) is characterized by systemic symptoms and signs derived from a massive and uncontrolled inflammatory response caused by pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine dysregulation; it is characterized by continuous activation and expansion of macrophage and lymphocyte populations, which secrete large amounts of cytokines, causing the cytokine storm RELATED SYN: cytokine release syndrome (CRS) SOURCE: https://www.mlo-online.com/continuing-education/article/21138224/covid19-and-cytokine-storm-syndrome
hypercytokinemia (from NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/797585) A severe immune reaction in which the body releases too many cytokines into the blood too quickly. Cytokines play an important role in normal immune responses, but having a large amount of them released in the body all at once can be harmful. Hypercytokinemia can occur as a result of an infection, autoimmune condition, or other disease. It may also occur after treatment with some types of immunotherapy. Signs and symptoms include high fever, inflammation (redness and swelling), and severe fatigue and nausea. Sometimes, hypercytokinemia may be severe or life threatening and lead to multiple organ failure. Also called cytokine storm.

Amended definition and placed cytokine storm under increased inflammatory response MP:0001846 (in addition to abnormal cytokine secretion MP:0003009).
Consider adding new term:
cytokine storm (a child of abnormal cytokine secretion MP:0003009 as well as increased inflammatory response) AMENDED DEF: dysregulated and excessive cytokine and chemokine release in response to infection and other stimuli; can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or multiple-organ dysfunction, leading to physiological deterioration and death RELATED SYN: hypercytokinemia RELATED SYN: hypercytokinaemia SOURCE: PMID:32283152
Annotations to genotype MGI:6192275:
abnormal cytokine level ( J:211690 ) granuloma lesions are associated with an increase in several chemokines and cytokines (Ccl2, Ccl15, Il6, Il10, IFN-gamma, and TGF-beta) indicative of a local cytokine storm
