Suggestion: Parties... #135

If I am throwing too much stuff out in here, just let me know...

Some of my favorite console RPGs allow for mutliple character parties in which
you have 2 or more characters that walk around with your main character. The
secondary characters may have better skills, weapons, or items than the main
character, and make for a more unique makeup for each player. Characters all
level-up and different rates, depending on what type of character they are, and
can equip different kinds of weapons or use different items. This allows for
specialization. Like a "healer" can use more advanced potions than a warrior
can. A hunter can use range weapons to avoid being hit, and a magic user can
stand back and either attack or protect the rest of the party. Also you can
arrange your party so that your strongest character walks at the front of the
party so that he is the first that he will be attacked by monsters, and if you
have a hunter in the party, he enables you to see further through the fog of
war, etc.

Any thoughts?

See issue 47 for multiplayer.

Should be closed as a duplicate.

Sorry, I thought the "multiplayer" post was referring to other human
characters. I am referring to NPCs that join your party.

I think these are two unique requests, almost to the point of being mutually
exclusive. This request is significantly easier to implement though doesn't
really meld well with the current game-play setup. The other request is to be
able to play with other human players.

To make this work would result in a need to rework the encounter system, so you
are more likely to encounter multiple enemies at once. This leads to a cascade
of other changes and inevitably changes a large portion of the game.

Now I'm not saying that this is inherently a bad thing; however I would like to
see this continue to develop as-is before transitioning this into Just Another
FinalFantasy Clone.

This is just my humble opinion.

As a side note, I wouldn't worry about throwing out too many ideas. Just don't
feel bad if/when they get shot down.

My bad, I misunderstood your suggestion then.

Currently I think this is too early to suggest as we dont have ranged weapons,
skills or spells in the game. Or maps/areas that are too difficult for the hero
to handle alone.

Yeah, I think this could be both a separate issue and the same as 47. As
joeybear was saying NPC's don't really fall under multiplayer although having a
mulitplayer "gang" is an interesting idea.

Just a suggestion for enhancement, but it may be something that would make more
sense further down the development road...
I really like this game thus far, and I can't wait for the next release.
(sitting at level 24 right now and have 25k gold...)
One of the best RPG ever (in my humble opinion) was Phantasy Star 2. Not that
it had the best graphics, music, or action (it did not), but it went on
forever. You could play that game for hours and hours and it just kept going.
then when you finally did beat it, you could start from the beginning again and
play a completely new game because it was customized based on your choices
throughout the game. I can see this game becoming much like that with its
simple maps and potential for complex story lines.

the game its self is good as 1 player but if it was parties how do with have
fun when the creatures u are killing have no chance to kill u.. this would be
simply boring. but npc's i would say like the npc's would cost maby alot of
cash. a npc could have damage or be a tank..

If you make the monsters random instead of visible on the maps, you can group
them as well. Let's say your party is 2 or 3 in size, then you can set the
system to make it more likely to encounter groups of 2 or 3 or more monsters.
Then experience is split up evenly among the party members.

You may have forgotten that monsters may have ranged and/or area attacks that
may be a challenge for a party as well... Particularly if more monsters may
join the fray during the course of battle.

Thank you for the report and for your idea.

I have considered adding support for having allies that follow you around, but
have decided that this is not something that we will add. The story I'm
planning is centered around the decisions that you as a player takes in
response to what has happened to Andor, and not around a party.

As it is now, having parties (that you define when starting the game) does not
fit well with either the current interface nor the planned story. Maybe if we
do a Andor's Trail 2 :) Or if someone creates a fork of the game with a
different story. But at the moment, this is not something that we will add.

Thank you for the idea though.
