Pygments : a lexer and highlighter for many languages actually used http://pygments.org/
Linguist: the library Github uses to detect languages: https://github.com/github/linguist . It rellies on a large number of diverse Textmate bundles for lexing: https://github.com/github/linguist/tree/master/vendor/grammars

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm familiar with these tools, but had not looked inside them for the lists of languages. It's a good idea, though. I've started looking and started adding languages based on the source code. There are hundreds of languages, and Googling for information and Wikipedia pages is very time consuming, so it might be a while before they're all done ...

A further update: it looks like the current SoManyLanguages list has all of the ones from Linguist. I remember now why: in another project, I'm mining GitHub, and I previously extracted a very large list of languages used in GitHub projects. That was the original basis of the list of languages in SoManyLanguages. Since GitHub uses Linguist, it is not surprising that what we have is a superset of what is in Linguist.
