happy1.c has concerning potential for happiness overflow. Some sensible solutions if we've attained maximum happiness:

Stop and enjoy this state of enlightenment
Fork children that partition our happiness so they can increase total happiness

Unfortunately, due to the known "hedonic treadmill" bug, it may be impossible to stop and enjoy a high state of enlightenment. I believe a better solution is to use 64-bit or arbitrary-precision integers to continue running on the treadmill indefinitely.
