main.js - clean up code, create logical functions #3

main.js is a mess and I need to separate code out in to functions that are doing specific things so that it's more readable.

made it a bit more readable but could still use work so am leaving open for now

this issue is too general. If I come across more specifics of what to improve in main.js structure then I'll make a new one
