slow copy with small file to sshfs

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. have a folder (in my case: dojo-ajax-framework) with many small files
2. copy it to debian linux ssh via macfusion

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

it's very slow. I get ~300kb/s on 100mbit lan.
big single files are fast.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

osx 10.4.10
MacFusion Version 1.2 Beta 3 (1.1.268)
MacFuse 0.4

Please provide any additional information below.

I tried several configs like
-o defer_auth -o blocksize=1

but at all its still slow :(
