From Stefan:

What I feel still missing, not necessarily in dash to dock, could also be a separate extension that interfaces with dash to dock, which displays the available workspaces with a highlight on the active workspace. Basically what I mean is to extend the list of applications with the list of workspaces where you can also switch to a specific workspace by clicking on it. I'd be interested in what you think about that. If it's still not clear I could fake a screenshot.

From Stefan regarding workspace based application indicators:

Take a look at the firefox icon in the dock. Let's imagine that firefox would be running on that desktop. I took the blue dot from the right side and copied it over to the left of the icon and changed the color. Green is probably not the best choice, but I wanted it to stick out.

Then I thought... hmm, it's not really catching my attention as much as I'd like because it is rather small so additionally I put a frame around the firefox icon and lightened up the background color to make it stick out.

IMO every instance running on the current desktop should have the dot color changed and/or duplicated to the opposite site of the icon. That way one can easily determine, hey I got 4 xterms running and 2 of the are running on the current desktop, for example. With the background highlighting one just glances at the dock and immediately recognizes which applications are running on the current desktop.
