A correction: On Windows, Win+Shift+# opens a new instance of an app, it doesn't reverse the thumbnail order. People like me also use the Win+Shift+# to open a new instance. The reverse order modifier should be optional.
Windows actually does both. If you're not already in the thumbnail overview, Win+Shift+# (in this case) opens a new instance of whichever application is the third from the left in the taskbar. If, however, you are already in the thumbnail view, the shift key simply reverses the thumbnail cycling direction.

As far as window management is concerned, this is a design principle from Microsoft Windows which I really enjoy.
Currently with dash to dock, I can cycle through open windows of the same application by pressing the super/win key plus the corresponding number key (according to the horizontal position/order of the icon in the dock). What I would also like to be able to do is go back the other way.
Say I have 5 Firefox windows open in a single workspace and I want to cycle through them. I tap Super+# a few times but go one window too far through my list of open windows. It would be great to be able to then press Super+Shift+# a single time to go back to the window I'm looking for. With the current behaviour I'm forced to simply loop around once more until I find the window I want.
This is the default behaviour in Microsoft Windows and I would love to see it implemented here too!
I hope the screenshot makes the implementation I have in mind clearer.
