Show kinship #106

Would be nice to optionally be shown the name of the kinship relations:

If same parents If male then brother If female then sister If connection goes one up and the sideways uncles One down cousins Two down nephews once a removed Three down grand nephews once removed If any connection is via half-siblings, simply add "half-" in front of the thing.

When one individual is pivoted , all others found display what they are in relation to the pivoted one.

Question is , what if you want to see the relation to someone who's in a part of the tree that's currently not displayed and you'd have to pivot someone else first in order to expand the tree? Maybe one simple tap is not enough

Diagram would be perfect to host kinship names, since it's already built on a rigid relation structure around a pivot (I called him fulcrum).

But as I already answered in the group, this would be a huge study on how kinship are described in different cultures, to permit correct translations on various languages, and then make the code support all that. Theoretically it's a good feature for a genealogy app, but actually it doesn't excite me, because of all the cultural exceptions that we will find implementing it.

Family Gem at present is translated into 30 languages. In English is half-sibling, but e.g. in Italian is fratellastro/sorellastra (from fratello/sorella).

Rome was not built in one day. If you start with English only, it's a good start. In languages where it's not yet supported it could be disables by the user. Should be a family gem setting, not in the gedcom file, so no issues with that. In English, we also distinguish between half-brother and half- sister , but afaik fratellastro is step brother . In Chinese , siblings are differentiated between older siblings and younger siblings. That should be the whole of translators , all you'd need is a template having relative positions with respect to the pivot. And a translator has to fill out what that relationship is called. So in English, you'd just put "brother" in any field of make siblings, no matter if older or younger, in Chinese, the translator puts two different words .
