Add IOIO support! #546

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

Since this new device is created, it would be nice to add support for its
library.

Which device are you talking about?

You mean this board: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10585 ? Get me one and I
do it ;)

Yeah! exactly!

I think IOIO will support open accessory api soon(I could be wrong). So I think
it is better that SL4A support the open accessory api.

Problem with the Open Accessory API is that it requires Gingerbread (2.3) and
AFAIK none of the core developers have any device with it. I wouldn't mind in
getting a 2.3 device as a donation to the proect ;) with an IOIO and/or Open
Accessory API board for implementing this :-)

IOIO it uses a very simple library to interface with many devices and requires
an Android 1.5! So why do not you create an implementation with sl4a?

I like the IOIO idea, but again I have not even a single board, so I can't test
it!

At this point, there isn't a lot of impetus to include IOIO into SL4a.

Mainly concerned about code bloat, for a product only a few people are likely
to use.
If there is more demand, and/or someone can provide the loan of an actual IOIO
board, we may revisit this.

However, I took the time to look at the source code for the IOIO Java library.
It communicates with the card via TCP, which mean you could easily write a
Python (or whatever) binding for the IOIO library, and the code would be not be
taking up space in the sl4a API.

I'd absolutely love to be able to communicate with an IOIO from sl4a, but I
have no clue how I'd go about writing such a binding. Is anyone else working on
this? What would I need to know about to do this myself?

You can join the ioio-dev group and start a technical discussion there. I can
help with technical questions.

Any news about this issue ? Is it now possible to use IOIO board from Py4a ?

I'm still waiting any news about this issue. It would be great if we can
communicate IOIO board with Android through sl4a.
