Thanks for this report. I'll move the pattern for tüpf-li-schei-ßer to the end of the file, where I'll encase it in a separate \ifluatex check. About the spelling of tüpf-li-schies-ser: Given that the word is, I believe, of Schwyzerdüütscher origin and the "ei" is pronounced and written "ie" in Schwyzerdüütsch, I thought I'd be consistent by (a) not using the ß character and (b) using "ss" instead of "ß", for those people who wish to spell the word in Schwyzerdüütscher format... However, just to cover all the bases (bad pun alert!), I'll be happy to also provide a pattern for the hybrid version, viz., tüpf-li-scheis-ser.
Well, this is truly a Nebenkriegsschauplatz, but I came across some obscure behavior, so I thought I'd report it.
Compiling this with pdfLaTeX gives me the interesting error message
Only enabling both
inputenc
andfontenc
gets rid of the error message. The problematic character is theß
. The easiest way to avoid this error is probably just getting rid of this hyphenation pattern (since we can't assume input and font encoding for a user), but the folks on tex.sx might be able to come up with a way to provide a hyphenation pattern for a word withß
without specifying the encodings. On an unrelated note: Are the
e
and thei
in the second word in this line switched on purpose?
