What/why?

This helps Jekyll keep track of which files have not been modified since the site was last built, and which files will need to be regenerated on the next build. This file will not be included in the generated site. It’s probably a good idea to add this to your .gitignore file. http://jekyllrb.com/docs/structure/

that's curious, I already have several sites generated by Jekyll, and never saw this file.

any idea when it appears?

he appeared in version 3.0, came here on my machine since I adopted this version.

So googled it's like a cache that helps to identify files that have already been generated, I believe the use of key --increment do with it arises.

ok, merged, but I still have no idea why this file did not show in my setup.
